YOUR MUSCLES…..THE BIGGEST CONSUMER……!!!!!!!!!

Did you know that your muscles are the biggest consumer of energy. This is followed by your liver and the brain. However, your muscles accounts for over 80% of your glucose consumption in your body. Remember from previous article, it was clearly stated that your health status is defined by your metabolic health. If you are metabolically healthy, it means you are healthy. But, if you’re metabolically unhealthy, it’s just a matter of time, chronic diseases will come visiting. Chronic diseases like diabetes high blood pressure, cancer, heart diseases, dementia, depression, arthritis etc are symptoms of metabolic dysfunction. The key element that determines your metabolic health is your body’s ability to use and manage glucose. Glucose is the preferred energy source of your body. In the absence of glucose, if you’re metabolically flexible, your body will switch over to fats cells. However, these fat cells are still converted to glucose by the liver and ketones are produced as a result. If the fat cells gets depleted, your last source of energy will be your protein tissues, which will still be converted to glucose by the liver. So your body’s ability to metabolise glucose is what will determine how insulin sensitive you will become. Ladies and gentlemen, your muscles consume more than 80% of your blood glucose. This means that your blood glucose will always be controlled, making you to be insulin sensitive and thus, become metabolically healthy. On the other hand, imagine if your muscle mass is low, it means that the consumption of your blood glucose will be small. And when this happens, much of the blood glucose will be dumped in the blood, this will result in your body secreting high amount of insulin to control your blood sugar. The result of chronic high level of insulin in your body is insulin resistance, which is the primary cause of metabolic dysfunction. This explains why as people gets older, they develop different chronic diseases, because as you get older, you naturally lose your muscle mass. If you don’t deliberately build up your muscle mass, as you get older, not only will you be weak and feeble, You will have less muscles to consume the glucose, and insulin resistance will develop and the consequences are dire. The good news is that you can always build up your muscles, but, it’s more challenging if you start very late. But, better be late than never. Dr. Adeleke Adedapo Medical Consultant Toshma Herbs Company Ltd. https://toshmaherbscompany.com/
